The explain-it-to-me trap
Here's how most people try to learn with ChatGPT. They type "explain quantum entanglement" or "teach me about contract law" and read the response. It's clear, well-written, and makes sense as they read it. They feel like they've learned something.
They almost certainly haven't.
Reading a good explanation produces a feeling of understanding — what psychologists call the fluency illusion. The explanation is coherent, you follow the logic, your brain registers "I get this." But that sense of clarity is about the quality of the explanation, not the state of your knowledge.
Louis Deslauriers and colleagues showed this in a 2019 study at Harvard: students who watched polished physics lectures rated their learning higher than students who did active problem-solving. But the problem-solving group scored significantly better on tests. Feeling like you learned and actually learning are different things.
No diagnostic means no direction
A good tutor starts by figuring out what you already know. They probe your existing understanding, find the gaps, and build from there. ChatGPT starts from zero every time.
When you ask ChatGPT to explain something, it has no idea whether you're a complete beginner or someone who understands 80% and is confused about one specific mechanism. It can't distinguish between a student who needs the full foundation and one who needs a single missing link. So it gives you the generic version and hopes for the best.
You can try to compensate by giving more context in your prompt. "I understand X and Y but I'm confused about Z." You might think: "I'll ask it to quiz me." You can. But ChatGPT generates questions without a model of your knowledge. It doesn't know which specific misconceptions to probe. It doesn't escalate difficulty based on your performance. It doesn't detect that you got the right answer for the wrong reason. It's generating quiz-shaped text, not running a diagnostic.
Genuine comprehension checking requires a model of what the learner knows, what they've been taught, and what errors are common. A well-designed learning system does this. A chatbot responding to prompts cannot.
The illusion of a feedback loop
Chatting with ChatGPT feels interactive. You ask, it answers, you ask again. It seems like a dialogue, like having a tutor. But the feedback loop is one-directional. You get information. It gets your next question. At no point does it evaluate your understanding.
Real tutoring — the kind Bloom documented in his famous 1984 "2-sigma problem" paper — involves constant assessment. A human tutor asks probing questions, watches for confusion, adjusts explanations on the fly, and doesn't move on until the student demonstrates understanding. The average tutored student performed two standard deviations above classroom students. That's the power of real adaptive interaction.
ChatGPT gives you the explanation part of tutoring without the assessment part. That's like going to a doctor who describes your condition in detail but never runs any tests.
What structured learning provides that chat doesn't
The gap between ChatGPT-as-teacher and actual learning is structural, not cosmetic. Structured learning provides: diagnostic assessment before instruction begins, a sequenced path through material (prerequisites before advanced topics), comprehension verification at each step, adaptive branching when understanding breaks down, and energy-aware pacing that adjusts to your cognitive state.
ChatGPT provides none of these by design. It's a conversation engine, not a learning engine. Brilliant at answering questions, useless at knowing which questions to ask you.
